Scenting the Strong & Beautiful Women of Mad Max Fury Road: Lucy B Apothecary Perfumes

Scenting the Strong & Beautiful Women of Mad Max Fury Road: Lucy B Apothecary Perfumes

Recently, I’ve been sampling some fragrances sent to me by the UK celebrity makeup artist turned perfumer, Lucy Baldock-Sacchi. Lucy spent 12 years living in Australia, where she fell in love with the natural resources, healing atmosphere, the people and unpolluted lands. She discovered for herself the emotional, spiritual and physical benefits of the Australian Bush Flowers. Lucy B. is the only perfume company in the world to have infused the natural Australian Flower Essences within their products, sharing with everyone the unique Australian energy & lifestyle.

At the time, there was a gap in the market for the perfect combination of natural, organic ingredients & colour cosmetics. Lucy consulted with the Australian Bush Flower expert, Ian White, and developed specific essences that lift the spirit and enhance confidence. I have always been a fan of the original cult favourite, Pink Frangipani, and keep a roller bottle of the oil in my purse. All of the Lucy B perfumes are soft and gentle, and easy to wear. They are well priced, with all products in the line being under $50. My new favourite is Royal Water Lotus & Vanilla Musk, a gentle airy and watery floral that smells like clean skin and paradise. Really. Tropical Gardenia is another favourite, and Royal Green Fig & Vanilla Woods is too…it’s actually hard to choose as they are all gorgeous.

From her site:

Lucy B. Cosmetics & Fragrances is unlike any other beauty range. We believe that it takes a holistic lifestyle on every level to ultimately transform each person. By including Australian Bush Flower Essences and pure aroma-therapeutic extracts in every product, we have harnessed the power and magic of the Australian botanical apothecary to bring you benefits that go way beyond beauty. The result is a range that helps transform the body, mind and soul.

Of course, after seeing Mad Max: Fury Road, my mind has been obsessing over all things Australian. I won’t spoil it for you, but unless you have been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard that the female characters are strong, inspirational, and badass. When I left the film I was all fired up, partially because my adrenalin levels were off the charts, but also because I was in love with the women I met on Fury Road. I’ve been wearing Lucy B’s perfumes and test driving them, and appreciating her positive messages of strength, health and confidence that the line wants to share while inspiring the wearer. Then I thought – who better to wear these magical feminine Australian scents than the women of Fury Road?  I fell in love with them all – in particular, The Five Wives. When we first meet them, they seem so precious and delicate,  one wonders how on earth they will survive when taken out of their prison. It becomes immediately clear that these women are not delicate flowers, and that like many prisoners, they were not broken, but emboldened and fortified by their oppression.

Perhaps one day, they help cultivate the scorched world around them, and with the wisdom of The Many Mothers and that bag of The Seed Carrier, grow and share beautiful flowers with healing essences with everyone around them. At first one might think that soft beautiful floral scents are counter-intuitive perfumes for seriously badass women to wear. But I say, these women don’t need a perfume to project their strength. They do that quite well on their own.

From left: The Dag, Toast The Knowing, Cheedo The Fragile, The Splendid Angharad, and Capable

Abbey Lee – The Dag: At first the angelic blonde Dag appears flighty and fragile, but the reality is that she has a heightened sense of awareness as to what is going on around her. She slings around insults fearlessly, while also praying to “anyone who will listen”. She is strong while appearing ethereal. I would scent her in Royal Water Lotus & Vanilla Musk.

Top notes of lotus and watery musk a heart of rose petals within a base of warm amber & precious woods.

Zoë Kravitz – Toast The Knowing: Toast is a bit different from the other wives. Physically, she is shorter and her hair has been hacked into a shag that somehow manages to look pretty amazing. Toast loads the guns and counts the ammo, and would appear to aspire to being a warrior like Furiosa. I see her as someone who grows and thrives, despite the harshness of her world.  I would put her in Lucy B Australian Wild Jasmine.

Top notes of Pineapple & White Ginger middle notes of Wild Australian Jasmine, and bottom notes of Water Lily & Magnolia. Australian Wild Jasmine scents the skin creating a wildly sensual yet fresh Australian scent while boosting the mood through the flower essences. Simply put, it's Australia in a bottle.

Courtney Eaton – Cheedo the Fragile: The youngest of the wives (the actress was 16 during the making of the film!), Cheedo was comfortable in the enclosed world of her prison in The Citadel, and is fearful of the outside world. She endures, however, and emerges from the battle a stronger woman. I would scent her in Lucy B Royal Egyptian Amber & Honeysuckle, with delicate top notes, but warm and enduring base notes.

Top notes of honeysuckle and peach a heart of jasmine flowers with a touch of patchouli within a warm base of amber and cashmere.

Rosie Hungtington-Whiteley – The Splendid Angharad: Splendid is visibly pregnant and is completely unafraid. She is conflicted about the child she is carrying, and is courageous, but can also be reckless.  She uses herself as a human shield without hesitation, and is determined to live a free life. She makes me think of the feminine and strong rose, so I would scent her with Lucy B Royal Peony Rose & Mandarin Musk.

Top notes of mandarin & tangerine a heart of pink peony and base of delicate camellia flowers. Royal Peony Rose is blended with confidence enhancing Australian flower essences.

Top notes of mandarin & tangerine a heart of pink peony and base of delicate camellia flowers.

Riley Keough – Capable: Early on we learn that Capable is tender and compassionate. She cares for a sick and dying character who was trying to capture her, and is aware that her lunatic captor and the leader of The Citadel world is not immortal. She is empathetic and caring. I see Capable as nurturing, and somehow the green freshness of Lucy B Royal Green Fig & Vanilla Woods would be perfect for her.

Top notes of fresh green fig & pepper with a heart & base notes of green leaf, creamy coconut & sensual vanilla.

Finally, I want to scent Furiosa. I am almost overwhelmed emotionally when I think of her. She was kidnapped as a child, and suffered unspeakable atrocities at the hands of the insane leader of The Citadel. Her one dream and defining goal is to get back to The Green Place of The Many Mothers.

Furiosa Mad Max Fury Road

Her pain and vulnerability are buried deep below her badass-ness and the anger and fury that propels her. I want to scent her dream and memory of a green, lush and caring paradise, with the queen of all fragrances, gardenia. Lucy B Tropical Gardenia perhaps embodies The Green Place, and I wish that for Furiosa.

Top notes of gardenia, middle notes of orchid flowers and dewy green with bottom notes of cashmere musk.

Lucy B perfumes are available on her site,  in many other online boutiques, and in many retail locations in Canada, the US and around the world. Check the Lucy B store locator to find the right one for you!

Daly Beauty Morning Skincare Routine

Daly Beauty Morning Skincare Routine

Goodness knows, my skincare routine changes from time to time. I am a shameless product junkie, and I am always looking for the latest greatest skincare item. Right now, however, this is the facial skincare routine I am loving right now.

Face toner

My favourite toner right now. I like the light plastic bottle (no breakage) and the spritz option. I spray it all over my face

Lip treatment

The Benefiance WrinkleResist Intensive Eye Contour Cream (replaced the original Benefiance, I see little or no difference in formula) is simply the best eye cream for dry skin.

My newest eye serum fave – it’s light and absorbs instantly, and I notice a lovely smoothness to the eye area.

Chanel makeup primer

If you don’t have this, what are you waiting for? Expensive, yes, but you use drops of this. It will last ages. And it makes you gorgeous.

Peter thomas roth face wash

Still my favourite glycolic cleanser. My skin feels clean and clear, yet never dry. LOVE.

Well. Everyone needs Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel. Delivers much-needed moisture to the skin.

A luxurious smoothing  moisturizer that acts as a primer. It has all these melt-y ingredients that seem to magically bond with your skin ( #protip I also put it on my cuticles)

This Kosmea serum is fantastic, and the tone beautifying rosehip oil in this line is what makes it so fantastic. I use this on my neck and décolletage to combat time and sun…

I alternate this with my Skinceuticals B5 Gel. It’s rich and a rejuvenating treat for your skin. Instantly adds radiance, and has long term benefits.
All products are subject to change, of course. The links are below! Do you use any of these products? What is part of your routine?
Cult Favourites: Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè & Clarins Beauty Flash Balm

Cult Favourites: Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè & Clarins Beauty Flash Balm

Cult beauty items don’t always deliver exactly what we hope they do. I suppose this has a lot to do with skin/hair type and expectations. So I always approach a cult favourite with caution. Such caution was not necessary with Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè & Clarins Beauty Flash Balm.

clarins beauty flash balm

I’ve loved Clarins Beauty Flash Balm forever. It’s one of those things I get, love, use up, then forget about because, ALL OF THE OTHER BEAUTY THINGS.  I recently revisited Beauty Flash Balm. I’ve been tired and this never ending season has my skin feeling dull. From Clarins website:

The ultimate pick-me-up for tired, stressed skin—Clarins best-selling radiance maker helps eliminate signs of fatigue in a flash! Instantly moisturizes, brightens and tightens facial contours so skin looks rested and relaxed. Olive and Witch Hazel extracts help smooth the skin’s surface, diffusing the look of lines and wrinkles. Soothing Bisabolol helps restore skin’s youthful glow. Preps skin for perfect make-up application and hours of luminous wear.

That pretty much says it all. It does what it promises,  it feels wonderful, and smells wonderful. It feels like simple yet luxurious skincare, and using it is like a mini spa treatment at home. The texture is rich, creamy and almost whipped. I have a sample size that I keep in my purse so I can dab a small amount all over my face at any time of day. It is an instant brightener. Love it. At around $50 CAN for a 50ml tube, it isn’t cheap. But a little goes a long way, and I recommend using only a small amount for best results.

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè is another beauty potion that promises to add radiance to the skin while helping our make up look better. It has this rich melty texture and feels like a potent moisturizer. It is almost “oily” but don’t be afraid of the oil. Again, it sort of defies definition. While it may appear oily, it manages to impart just a glow to the skin while locking in healing moisture. Even on my oily and sensitive skin. I’ve been testing it for weeks with no reactions other than a healthy glow. It has a soft almost imperceptible scent that dissipates quickly. But it’s magic lies in the perfect canvas it leaves on the skin for make up. From the website:

24-Hour Miracle Cream The must have product for makeup artists, models and celebrities. A cult favorite that has found its way onto countless photo shoots, television and film sets internationally. This creamy lotion is three products in one: primer, moisturizer, and make-up remover. Its formula remains extremely simple and effective with nourishing ingredients that restores the skin’s natural glow and gives a boost to tired dehydrated skin.

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè has the added cachet of being one of those “impossible to find unless you shop in France” products. You know, the kind Gwynnie would flog on the “French Pharmacy” page of GOOP. Happily, Embryolisse is now available to the great unwashed. I’ve even seen it at Urban Outfitters! I bought mine at a fab sale on Hautelook, but the cost of $28 for around 76ml is actually pretty reasonable. It is highly concentrated, as the name suggests, and a tube will last ages.

Skin Having a Seasonal Freak Out? Calm It With Consonant Skincare And Osmia Organics.

Skin Having a Seasonal Freak Out? Calm It With Consonant Skincare And Osmia Organics.

Ah, our skin. We finally get our zits/dry patches/insert your issue here under control then BAM. The seasons change and it all goes to hell. I’m certain that somehow our hormones get involved but I’m no doctor so that’s just guesswork. But I always feel like when our skin goes haywire, hormones are somehow involved. But I’ve been able to clock major breakouts with the change of seasons for years now, and I am SO OVER IT.

My most recent skin mania episode had me digging through my mountains of skincare supplies. I’d tried the usual suspects – benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulphur – you name it. Nothing was helping. My Consonant DHE Mask has been helping, but I needed more. Something important to remember when you have acne or break out prone skin is that it’s not just too much oil and hormones that cause this condition. It’s also sensitivity. It took me years to figure out that beating my skin into submission with tough love wasn’t going to help. I realized this – finally – after my millionth facial. Because every single facial (with extractions – ouch!) I’ve had has resulted in breakouts. Wax my brows? Cystic acne. Scrub, steam and massage for an hour? Acne. My skin needs a gentle touch.

Well, dear readers, there was hope lurking in my stash.

Consonant Organic Foaming Facewash

Consonant Organic Foaming Face Wash: I decided that I would start with using a super gentle cleanser on my skin. Everything I’ve used from Consonant to date just feels wonderful and soothing on my skin, and their Organic Foaming Face Wash also feels great. It has an air infused pump to make it foamy, vs sulphates, so it’s perfect for those with sensitivities. But even better than that, it cleanses my face beautifully and gently. My face looks and feels clean, and never tight or dry. No wonder this is an award winner! From their site:

Consonant Organic Foaming Face Wash is a gentle yet effective cleanser, packed with nourishing botanicals like teatree oil and grapeseed oil to help hydrate skin, eliminate uneven skin tones and fight blemishes. pH balanced, you don’t need a toner. This Face Wash is 99.5% natural.

Osmia Organics Facial Calibration Serum

Osmia Organics Facial Calibration Serum: I’ve talked before about using oils on oily facial skin – seems counterintuitive, yet there is a wisdom there. I love the feel of a beautiful high quality oil preparation on my face. You can almost feel your skin thank you as it drinks up the nutrients and moisture. The description of the Facial Calibration Serum on the Osmia Organics website says:

A select combination of plant oils, chosen for their balancing qualities, helps skin become more even and smooth, and assists in regulating sebum production.  Olive squalane, kukui oil, and macadamia oil nourish the skin, and calming schisandra fruit extract soothes irritation.  Super powered acai delivers an antioxidant boost, and organic black seed oil brings a vitamin and mineral infusion.  Absorbs quickly, and does not leave the skin oily.  In fact, used regularly, this face serum can help oily skin behave itself, and combination skin become less confused.  The scent is mildly herbaceous, with the subtle spicy undertones of black cumin seed oil.

Well, my skin was confused AND misbehaving, so I started using the Facial Calibration Serum at night, and I’m glad I did. It recommends applying it to damp skin, and seriously, you only need a few drops to cover your whole face. I wake up with soft glowy skin that you’d never guess has been to hell and back. This serum has been added to my emergency skin care arsenal and I can’t imagine being without it.

Finally, my skin seems to be recovering. My breakouts and eruptions are stopping, and my face is healing. Hallelujah!

Consonant Skincare is available on their website, and you can find retailers here. Osmia Organics is  US based skincare company and you can purchase their products on their website.

Daly Skincare Love: Eucerin Lip & Hand Care Must-Haves

Daly Skincare Love: Eucerin Lip & Hand Care Must-Haves

Suzy Chapstick never has chapped lips

As you know, dear readers, I am always looking out for you and looking for ways to keep your skin soft and moisturized. Lips, too, need special care, what with all the mistletoe action at this time of year (note: keep Tic Tacs in purse). Eucerin, long known and loved for its cult moisturiser, Aquaphor, the petrolatum based miracle worker. If you have severely chapped or dry skin, you need Aquaphor. But back to our everyday needs and Eucerin.

Eucerin Intensive Lip Balm is amazing when you need a little more than just a moisturizing product. This repairs and nourishes beautifully with glycerin, shea butter, evening primrose oil, panthenol and lactic acid in a petrolatum base. Before you freak out about petrolatum, remember that it is the main ingredient in Kiehls Lip Balm, (and Carmex, Blistex etc etc) one of the best lip balms on the market. Why? Because nothing holds moisture in better. Ok back to Eucerin Intensive Lip Balm – I love the addition of lactic acid. It is terrific for dry flaky lips for two reasons: the lactic acid molecule works to pull moisture into the cells of our skin, and exfoliates surface cells which helps to perfect the skin’s surface and restore a natural glow, as well as improve absorption of topical treatments. The Eucerin Lip Balm is pretty much fragrance and taste free as well, which is a plus for me. I can smell Carmex lip balm from across the room, let alone on my own lips. Verdict? Love. For around $5 you can’t do better than this.

Eucerin Repair Hand Creme with 5% Urea is meant for intense help with dry, cracked hands, and even for eczema. It feels like silk going on, soaks in beautifully while leaving your hands amazingly soft and smooth. It feels so good and rich you feel like your hands would be greasy and sticky after applying it, but that’s not the case at all. I like to rub it in around my cuticles and fingernails as they seem to suffer the most at this time of year. It is fragrance free which is important in my hand creams. I like my perfume in my perfume and a strong hand cream can take away from that. Eucerin Repair Hand Creme promises improved skin condition over time, so I will watch to see how that pans out. So far I have been using it at bedtime and after having my hands in hot water and am very happy with the way it works. No dry cracked skin on the backs of my hands means it’s working. Verdict? Love. A 75 ml tube is around $10, and a little goes a long way.

Eucerin products are available at drugstores and Walmart.

Vichy ProEVEN BB Cream Improves & Protects Your Skin

Vichy ProEVEN BB Cream Improves & Protects Your Skin

Or, in which I am not surprised that I am blown away by another Vichy product. I am a Vichy ProEVEN fan, and use it every day, as do both of my daughters. Since I’ve been using Vichy ProEVEN, I’ve never used less concealer in my life. I hear this from readers as well. So we know the stuff works (you can read my review of Vichy ProEVEN here). So how amazing is it that Vichy has jumped on the BB band wagon with a ProEVEN BB Cream. Wow! Now, what is a BB Cream, you ask? BB Cream – BB is short for “Blemish Balm” or “Beauty Balm”  is an multi-tasking cosmetic designed to replace serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock. It’s usually worn alone as a tinted moisturizer, over serum and moisturizer as a regular foundation, and under powder, depending on how much coverage you want.

I often find BB creams heavy on the silicone content and actually ended up with blemishes from blocked pores. And I don’t really use a foundation product. But my daughter was asking me about them (benefits of having a mom who is a beauty blogger!) as she wanted something that would last a little longer during the day than her mattefying powder/concealer combo. Knowing that we love Vichy ProEVEN, and more importantly, knowing that it does not irritate our sensitive acne-prone skin, I was keen to try their new ProEVEN BB Cream, or should I say, use my daughter as a guinea pig test subject. The big attraction to the Vichy BB Cream is that it contains medicated and effective ingredients that improve skin tone, moisturize and reduce pore size, just as the ProEVEN cream does. It contains SPF 20, and the same magical ingredients to even tone that is in their fabulous Vichy ProEVEN Cream.

Medium to Dark Vichy ProEVEN BB Cream in natural light, half blended.

She loves it, and it blends so seamlessly into the skin I can’t even tell she has make up on.  It doesn’t get shiny and does not appear to be blocking any pores, as her skin has been calm and lovely since she has been using it. The silicone content isn’t proving to be problematic, and if used properly, silicone can actually have healing properties. I have actually been using a teensy bit on my t-zone for coverage and mattifying and am really impressed. It is a fine texture that seems to melt into the skin leaving a softly blurred finish. It comes in two “universal” colours Light-Medium and Medium-Dark. I like Medium-Dark used sparingly, as it gives a slightly tan appearance. It really is so sheer but I do recommend testing on your skin if you can.

So- here is the best part! Daly Beauty is having a draw for some Vichy Pro-EVEN BB Cream! We have a few Mediums and Lights to give away, so there will be more than 1 winner. Weleda Skin Food Saved My Hungry Skin

You know those cult products- the ones that beauty editors all love and that folks in the know always have handy? Weleda Skin Food is one of those and it has long been on my Get This And Try It List. Well, try it I did, and let me say I’m so glad I did. Skin Food is full of all kinds of good stuff for your skin, like vitamin E from organic sunflower oil, organic pansy, rosemary, and calendula- a cocktail of healing moisturizing goodness. Weleda has been in the skincare business since 1921 and are named after the Celtic goddess of wisdom and healing- they have earned their reputation for excellence.
I took it on the ultimate moisture test- a three hour flight…starting in -25 C temperatures with bone dry central heating. I know, right? Yuck. So I started a few nights before flying by applying Skin Food to my hands, elbows and knees at night. I love the soft citrusy herbal (rosemary) scent- it is gentle and natural and dissipates as the product melts into your skin- which it does. It feels kind of heavy at first and I was afraid it would remain greasy but that wasn’t an issue. Right away I noticed my cuticles and elbows were softer when I woke up. So I started using it on my lips at night and throughout the day as I started carrying Skin Food in my bag, and again, it really moisturizes, not just coats or sits on top of skin.
Go ahead- dig in. Your skin will thank you.
I started using it on little rough spots, those pesky little pimples that take forever to heal, and my feet. The difference is astounding and it is easily one of the most effective and healing moisturizers I have ever used. The rough spots disappear, and any little cuts or pimples heal up quickly. I have a scar on my foot from surgery in the fall and the doctor recommended vitamin E to help diminish the scar- Skin Food is working it’s magic on that as well. After a holiday in the sun and sea, I would use Skin Food around my eyes, on my neck and décolletage and my skin is left dewy and moist. I am officially addicted to this stuff and now have one in my purse and my bedside table. It adds a nice glow to skin and is wonderful as a gentle highlighter when dabbed on the cheek or under the browbone. It’s a nice feeling to know you are using something gentle, natural and healing to bring out your own beauty….
At under $20 for a 75ml tube, this will last a long while, as it is so rich and gorgeous, a little goes a long way. Weleda products are available for sale on their website, at health food stores and pharmacies.

Exuberance Silicone-Free Primer is So Beautiful!

I’ve been meaning to review this for awhile, but, like my favourite perfumes, I tend to be at a loss for words when it comes to reviewing things I love. What should be an objective description and assessment comes off as gushing. Well, I guess that’s ok, and gird your loins for some gushing.

I love the “idea” of a make up primer- mattifying, smoothing and a reduction of shine. Sounds good, right? Sadly 99% of primers out there are loaded with silicone. If your primer rolls between your fingers with a lot of “slip” chances are that is the silicone. It’s ubiquitous and I am always amazed at the broad range of beauty products that contain silicone. So back to the Exuberance Beauty Helichrysum Silicone-Free Primer. The soft silky base in this is likely aloe but the real rockstar ingredient in this product is Helichrysm which is a plant in the sunflower family. Helichrysm is known to have unrivaled skin toning and tightening benefits, as well as regenerating qualities. This means it can help with the healing of dark spots, acne, and scars. I am all for healing skincare.

I would go so far to say that not only is this a primer that works well, but it actually improves my skin over time. Exuberance Beauty uses the best botanical ingredients money can buy and it shows. This product is full of luxury- it feels amazing and smells even better. A very soft orange blossom/neroli scent soothes and calms as you apply the product.  The emphasis is on soft as the fragrance is very gentle and dissipates after a few minutes. A little goes a long way and it sinks right into the skin. Results are visible immediately and as a user of very light bases for my make up, I often wear just this with some concealer where I need it (under eyes, sides of nose and random spots-sigh) and some powder and I’m good to go! It feels healing and soothing to my oily, acne prone yet sensitive skin as well as creating a smooth, shine free canvas for make up. My pores appear smaller and it keeps my oil in check. What more could you ask for in a primer? For $36 a 30ml bottle will go a long way, and considering what I’ve spent in the past, this is a small price to pay for the wonderful effects of this primer.
Exuberance Beauty is available on their website and at make up counters at several locations of the Bay
