I tried three, from a nice soft nude to a rich berry shade, and just love the way they feel on my lips. They last for ages without ever feeling dry or cakey. The new Clarins Lipliner Pencils are amazing as well, as they just glide on the lips perfectly. They are in shades of “nude” that are supposed to work with a variety of skin tones and worth checking out if you are like me and always looking for the “perfect nude”! I love to wear them with the divine Clarins Rose Wax Lip Balm.

I loved the Nude Rose and Nude Beige shades, as they are a perfect YLBB* shade. Even used alone with some lip balm they are lovely.

Pretty Natural Soft Lips by MAC

Pretty Natural Soft Lips by MAC

I rarely wear actual lipstick, but there was no way I could say no to the MAC Cosmetics Look In Box Lip Kit in Pretty Natural. I love a soft natural lip on myself more than a bold shade, and probably own every sheer pink/beige lip gloss ever made. Well, almost. With regards to makeup, I like colours that enhance and accentuate more than making a bold statement.

I never was a big lip liner person. A couple years ago a friend suggested I try Lancome Le Lipstique lip liner in Sheer Natural, which is pretty much the exact shade of my lips. Then, the incredible Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk, another pink I love. I went to Nordstrom for a mini makeover and the makeup artist used the shades in the MAC Cosmetics Pretty Natural look in a box, and I fell in love. The lip liner is probably the best part, and it is not a limited edition – Subculture.

The lipstick in Pretty Natural is a limited edition shade, as is the Lip Glass in Feeling Fine. They are truly a MLBB* shade. MAC lipsticks feel great on the lips, as most of you know, and last beautifully. What are your favourite YLBB** shades?

Soft, Satiny Lips & The Smoothest Matte Lip Ever: Maybelline Lip Studio Color Blur™

Soft, Satiny Lips & The Smoothest Matte Lip Ever: Maybelline Lip Studio Color Blur™

I’ve never liked the way matte lip colour feels on the lips. Even the ones that purport to be non-drying are drying to a certain extent. The ones that aren’t are more like a balm, and don’t last long on the lips. Which is fine with me, but if one wants the colour to last even a little bit, a balm doesn’t cut it.

Maybelline’s latest lip sensation is their Lip Studio Color Blur™ lip pencil line. It’s been getting rave reviews and really stands out from the crowd of the already excellent current drugstore lip offerings, which isn’t easy. The whole concept of the Color Blur™ is the “ombre lip”. Ombré – which means “fade” – hit the beauty world when it started in the hair. It’s now worked it’s way down to lips and nails, and was all over the runways in it’s various fashion permutations.

Maybelline Color Blur Lip Pencil

Lip Studio Color Blur™ is a unique pencil-style lipstick with a handy twist-up style that means no sharpeners. The unique part is the silicone blurring tool at the other end of the lip pencil. You are to use this to blur the lip product along the edge of your lips, but I use it to blend the colour all over my lips, almost like a blotter. I love it.

dalybeauty maybelline color blur lip pencil

I haven’t rocked the ombré lip yet but I do love this lip pencil just as regular old-school lipstick. It feels a lot like a balm, but it’s a lighter texture. If your lips are dry or chapped, this product won’t smooth them, so be sure to have exfoliated and moisturized before applying Color Blur™.

It glides on like silk and as it fades it leaves a soft stain effect, so it lasts well. The matte is more of a satin matte, which is gorgeous as it doesn’t look dry or dusty. I also like to layer mine with the new and amazing Baby Lips Lip Glosses (Pink Pizzaz is a favourite) for a slightly more dewy look.  The vivid shades are gorgeous, but of course I love the soft mauve-rose shade of I Love To Mauve It. For $11.99 CAD this is a great value. Color Blur™ feels and looks luxe. If you love matte lips, this is a must-have!

Bobbi Brown Uber Pink Collection Is Also Uber Pretty

Bobbi Brown Uber Pink Collection Is Also Uber Pretty

We all love Bobbi Brown cosmetics because she knows what flatters. She isn’t breaking ground with crazy colours, which I love too, but instead she is simply grounding. Find what flatters you, and have fun with it. And of course, pink is a universally flattering colour that, in the right shade, makes everyone looks amazing. So her Uber Pink Collection was really a natural progression. From Bobbi Brown:

Want to look and feel pretty in seconds? Try a pop of pink—it’s all you need. “From light to neutral, bright to bold, there’s a shade of pink to suit all skin tones,” Bobbi says. Featuring options for kissable lips to flirty tips, the Uber Pink collection is a totally modern monochromatic mix that can go sweet and subtle or deep and dramatic. The effect is instantly lifting, flattering and gorgeous.

I took a shine to the Be Pretty collection, which has the softer shades of nude-pink. Antigua Illuminating Bronzer has been a staple in my collection forever, and is the perfect sheer pink bronze blush. It’s an unusual bronzer-blush hybrid that I feel for immediately and cannot imagine not having handy. It’s perfect, buildable, and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin.

The real surprise in this collection for me was the lipstick. I don’t really wear lipstick, per se, but prefer sheer balm-type of lip products. But her lipstick in Pink Kiss won me over immediately – lipstick love! The perfect nude pink lip, without washing me out or looking weird and cakey on my lips, this velvety smooth semi-matte colour is da bomb.

Top it off with the pretty pretty Baby Pink Lip Gloss (which also looks lovely on it’s own) and you have a softly glam pink lip with some shine and depth.

Finally! A real grown-up lipstick I actually like and will wear. Leave it to Bobbi Brown to create a gorgeous and flattering colour that even a colour-phobe like me will wear!

Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in Coral For Endless Summer Kisses

Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in Coral For Endless Summer Kisses

make up forever aqua lip coral swatch

Wow! I love being wowed by something, and the new Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge shades from the Aqua Summer collection are so gorgeous! I fell hard for Coral and Baby Pink. They are so bright & summery and basically like a colour tattoo for your lips. Seriously – you cannot rub, wipe or smudge this stuff off without make up remover. It’s actually astounding. They aren’t slick or slippery on the lip, and they come with a clear gloss attached to add shine and a plump look to the lips. I find if you apply a thin layer and blend it (quickly!) with your finger, you can wear it on it’s own, like a stain, for more of a velvet satin finish. Coral is super flattering and I can see it working on any skin tone. I am not a fan of strong lip colours at all, but fell hard for these beauties. I go a little lighter on my eye make up when I wear a stronger lip. I hate feeling overly made up, and like to strike a pretty balance.

Daly Lippy Love: Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur

Daly Lippy Love: Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur

I love my Chanel Rouge Coco Shines. They are moisturizing as well as sheer, which means they can be applied without a mirror ie. foolproof. This really appeals to the colour shy lip product lover in me, but there is the benefit of a gradual introduction to wearing colour on the lips. I don’t think there will ever come a time when I will go for a full on opaque intense lip color, but, never say never. At this point though, the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines are just perfect.

My daughter recently got a Rouge Coco Shine that was such a lovely fuschia/pink tone that I decided I needed it for myself. It’s Bonheur, which translated from French means “happiness”, and that sounds pretty lovely to me. I tried it, loved it, bought it. I think it will get a lot of wear this season. Again, please excuse the iPhone photos. Hopefully soon I will figure out how to use a real camera….

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur is available at Chanel counters.

Buxom Lip Tarnish is Causing A Scandal On My Lips

Buxom Lip Tarnish is Causing A Scandal On My Lips

Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish is a big sort of pencil/crayon that tints like a stain, shines like a gloss, moisturizes like and plumps as well. I first read about it on Best Things In Beauty  and for a lip colour-phobe like me, the fact I felt I had to have it was impressive on it’s own. I guess I liked the idea that it wasn’t really a lipstick, as I hate the feeling of something thick on my lips, or something that requires maintenance or touch ups. So I found them, tried them, and found I liked Scandal, a “rose plum” colour. It’s the same colour that was raved about on Best Things in Beauty, which makes sense, as both Charleston Girl and I tend to like similar colours.

Indoors in natural light…

The formula is creamy and smooth, and applies like a dream, even for me. The pencil-like end makes it easy to apply, and the fact that this colour is like a darker version of my own lip colour helps as well. I like to apply it, and then wait a bit for the staining/plumping action to happen. It isn’t a massive tingly or stinging plumping effect, more of a slightly cooling sensation. There are emollients like vitamin E to keep your lips soft & moisturized The stain is lovely, even and gorgeous. I really can’t say I have ever used anything like this, and I love it. I can get to that stage quickly if I just blot with tissue a few minutes after application. There is a very slight sweet vanilla scent that I notice when applying, but it fades almost immediately.I don’t detect a taste of any kind. The cap contains a sharpener that “keeps your creamy pencil perfectly prepped for whatever shenanigans that arise”. Cute.

In natural indoor light, right after applying

In same indoor light, about 30 minutes later, lightly blotted. Excuse my hair that I just noticed is stuck to my lip :-/

Verdict? Love. An amazing hybrid lip product that has earned a place in my make up collection.

Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Tarnish is available exclusively at Sephora online and at Sephora stores, where I got mine, for around $20.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Bel Ami – Perfect For The Lipstick Challenged (like me!)

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Bel Ami – Perfect For The Lipstick Challenged (like me!)

I was in a beauty conundrum. I wanted a lip colour that looked like, well, a colour. I am a YLBB (Your Lips But Better) woman at the best of times so this was indeed a challenge. My daughters are so brave and always sporting bright fun lippies and while I love colour, I just felt like they made me look old, weird and clownish. Not for moi. Chanel came to the rescue awhile back with their Rouge Coco Shine line, which is balm-like and basically gorgeous. All colours can be applied without a mirror (check), don’t settle into lines or bleed (check) and condition your lips (check). So I wandered up to the Chanel counter with high hopes and was not disappointed.

I had seen the pic above from Carolina Herrera on Beauty Editor  and had become obsessed with a slightly grape-y lip. Clinique Black Honey, you’re thinking! For some reason, that shade just doesn’t work on me. A tad too dark? I dunno, but it’s not me. As soon as I said SLIGHTLY grape-y, the Chanel SA grabbed Bel Ami. I recoiled as it looks so dark and suspiciously like ACTUAL LIPSTICK in the tube but, lo and behold, I loved it. It is perfect. I feel like a real laydee now, with a (sort of) lipstick to call my very own.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Bel Ami

Bel Ami swatched lightly on lower left, more heavily on upper right

I love the lipstick and Chanel trivia behind the name Bel Ami. Coco Chanel’s modiste career started with her hat-making and really bloomed when theatre actress Gabrielle Dorziat wore her designs in the Noziere play “Bel Ami” in 1912. If you haven’t seen the movie “Coco Avant Chanel” with the divine Audrey Tatou, you simply must.

Gabrielle Dorziat in “Bel Ami” and her Chanel chapeau…

Beautiful Lippy- Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy

Let me start out by saying I am not a lipstick girl. I don’t like anything that requires a mirror to apply or anything that has so much colour that it needs a precise and concise application. I like my lips to feel soft and moist so lipstick has just never appealed to me. Too thick, too much colour, and a “made up” look that just didn’t feel like me.  I am lucky enough to have fairly high colour in my lips naturally so gloss has always been enough.
Leave it to Chanel to change the way I think. I’d been reading about Rouge Coco all over the beauty blogosphere and had even swatched a few colours- tempted a bit by Mademoiselle but not quite enough to actually buy it. But, it did seem rich and creamy and the colours were gorgeous. I did get the Gabrielle, a gorgeous true red, for my oh so chic Parisienne sister in law for Christmas. She can wear ONLY red lipstick with no other make up and look like a million bucks. Only the French…
Anyways, the buzz for spring has been about Rouge Coco Shine- a sheer non lipstick lipstick. I was at my local Chanel counter getting a bottle of Rose Insolence nail polish that Sabrina wore so gorgeously on The Beauty Look Book (gorgeous, right?) and, wouldn’t you know it, they had the Rouge Coco Shine in Boy on the counter- “the” colour for spring. I gave it a try and was hooked. The perfect YLBB (your lips but better) look that just enhances my lip colour perfectly. It feels soft and smooth and is somehow perfect. Sold. I love it and know I will wear this. I can put it on without a mirror and love the way it enhances my complexion. A sort of pinky mauve tone that I imagine would work with many skin tones. It seemed to morph from cool to warm when I was looking at the swatch on my arm, depending on the way the light hit it. If anyone can do a colour that shape shifts, leave it to Chanel to do it right.

Available for around $38 at most Chanel counters- I got mine at The Bay.
