Skinceuticals Takes My Aging, Acne-Prone Skin To It’s Happy Place

Skinceuticals Takes My Aging, Acne-Prone Skin To It’s Happy Place

I’ve been a long time lover of Skinceuticals. I took these three products on a test drive for August and fell in love all over again.

Skinceuticals Blemish + Age Defense serum

Skinceuticals Blemish+Age Defense Serum is a miracle liquid that targets sebum production, unclog congested pores and reduces the appearance of spots and blemishes. I wrote about my love for this product here. It also helps on to minimize aging symptoms on the surface – uneven tone and fine lines. Here’s how:

Key Ingredient 1
Dioic acid: The naturally derived vegetable acid proposed to reduce sebum production.
Key Ingredient 2
LHA: A lipo-hydroxy acid, LHA exfoliates the skin, decongests clogged pores and refines the skin’s surface.
Key Ingredient 3
Salicylic acid: This beta-hydroxy acid refines the pores and helps reduce acne.

Skinceuticals Serum 10 AOX+

Skinceuticals Serum 10 Aox+ is new to me, and is frankly already blowing my mind. One of the many amazing things about this product is that it is immediately absorbed and cannot be rubbed off. It also boosts the effectiveness of sunscreens. It contains Vitamin C, which is a hero at reducing uneven skin tone and blotchiness. This particular formulation of vitamin C is designed to work on even the most sensitive of skins, which I have, and it feels soothing and lovely upon application. It helps with acne marks, and doesn’t clog pores.

Key Ingredient 1
10% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C): Neutralizes damaging free radicals and protects against oxidative stress.
Key Ingredient 2
0.2% Ferulic acid: This plant-based antioxidant neutralizes free radicals.

Combined with the Blemish+Age, the Serum 10 Aox+ makes my skin feel soft and dewy, and unless the environment is very dry, they are all I need on my face. It feels lovely going on, and has an almost immediate effect on skin tone. My face felt glowy after a few days of use.

Skinceuticals Reversatrol B E NIght time antioxidant

And now, for the pièce de résistance of my Skinceuticals journey, the Reversatrol B E, Nighttime Antioxidant Concentrate. Everyone knows that our skin goes into repair and rejuvenate mode while we sleep at night. Skinceuticals Reversatrol B E. From the Skinceuticals website:

Resveratrol is a potent polyphenol antioxidant found in grapes, various berries, nuts, and other plant sources.

Over the past 10 years the resveratrol molecule has garnered a reputation as the “longevity molecule.” New studies show that resveratrol has potential in the biology of anti-aging skincare working through a new antioxidant pathway of action.

Due to the natural instability of the resveratrol molecule, it is extremely difficult to formulate in meaningful, stable concentrations.

SkinCeuticals breakthrough formulation features a maximized concentration of 1% pure, stable resveratrol to neutralize free radical damage and repair the visible effects of age-accelerated skin.

As we age, the main issue we have, everywhere, is loss of density. Bones, muscles, fat and skin. So lifestyle, diet and hydration can go a long way to helping keep time at bay, but we need some external help as well. Our facial skin is thin and needs special care to maintain radiance, firmness, elasticity, and density. Skinceuticals B E helps with all of these issues and is proven to increase skin density by 18.9%.

Key Ingredient 1
1% Resveratrol: Derived from knotweed plant.
Key Ingredient 2
0.5% Baicalin: A flavonoid antioxidant derived from roots of Baikal Skullcap.
Key Ingredient 3
1% alpha tocopherol (vitamin E): The most abundant, pure form of vitamin E.

Reversatrol  B E is a night time game changer. It is so lovely on the skin and actually imparts an immediate radiance. But the best part happened to me after a couple weeks when I started waking up with glowy skin. Like, “use less makeup and concealer” glowy. It has aided in normalizing my sebum production, which means less shine and more radiance, less pimples and smoother skin.

I am loving this routine, and know that Skinceuticals will always have a place in my skincare regimen.

Soft, Satiny Lips & The Smoothest Matte Lip Ever: Maybelline Lip Studio Color Blur™

Soft, Satiny Lips & The Smoothest Matte Lip Ever: Maybelline Lip Studio Color Blur™

I’ve never liked the way matte lip colour feels on the lips. Even the ones that purport to be non-drying are drying to a certain extent. The ones that aren’t are more like a balm, and don’t last long on the lips. Which is fine with me, but if one wants the colour to last even a little bit, a balm doesn’t cut it.

Maybelline’s latest lip sensation is their Lip Studio Color Blur™ lip pencil line. It’s been getting rave reviews and really stands out from the crowd of the already excellent current drugstore lip offerings, which isn’t easy. The whole concept of the Color Blur™ is the “ombre lip”. Ombré – which means “fade” – hit the beauty world when it started in the hair. It’s now worked it’s way down to lips and nails, and was all over the runways in it’s various fashion permutations.

Maybelline Color Blur Lip Pencil

Lip Studio Color Blur™ is a unique pencil-style lipstick with a handy twist-up style that means no sharpeners. The unique part is the silicone blurring tool at the other end of the lip pencil. You are to use this to blur the lip product along the edge of your lips, but I use it to blend the colour all over my lips, almost like a blotter. I love it.

dalybeauty maybelline color blur lip pencil

I haven’t rocked the ombré lip yet but I do love this lip pencil just as regular old-school lipstick. It feels a lot like a balm, but it’s a lighter texture. If your lips are dry or chapped, this product won’t smooth them, so be sure to have exfoliated and moisturized before applying Color Blur™.

dalybeauty maybelline color blur swatch2

It glides on like silk and as it fades it leaves a soft stain effect, so it lasts well. The matte is more of a satin matte, which is gorgeous as it doesn’t look dry or dusty. I also like to layer mine with the new and amazing Baby Lips Lip Glosses (Pink Pizzaz is a favourite) for a slightly more dewy look.  The vivid shades are gorgeous, but of course I love the soft mauve-rose shade of I Love To Mauve It. For $11.99 CAD this is a great value. Color Blur™ feels and looks luxe. If you love matte lips, this is a must-have!

I Put Super Charged Greens On My Face: Eminence Organics Eight Greens And The End Of Hormonal Acne

I Put Super Charged Greens On My Face: Eminence Organics Eight Greens And The End Of Hormonal Acne

One of my best friends has been singing the praises of Eminence Organics skincare for years. I’ll admit to pooh-poohing organic and natural skincare in the past, but boy have things in that niche changed. I finally went to the famous Ottawa boutique spa, Oresta Organic Skincare, for one of the best facials I have ever had. My skin was in good hands, as Oresta herself has struggled with hormonal skin issues. She massaged, scrubbed, serumed and essenced my face into submission. My favourite part of the facial involved the Eminence products. They smell divinely spa-like and gentle, so that the whole user experience of the line is luxurious. That’s the best part of Eminence for me – there is a luxurious quality to the whole line. The luxury natural lines are becoming more common in the beauty world, as some people just won’t sacrifice luxury in the name of [allegedly] safer ingredients. I’m not saying that is good or bad, but just a fact. Part of the beauty ritual is feeling lovely, so if a product delivers on performance AND the ritual experience, consider me sold.

Even Kitty can't believe how amazing Eight Greens are!

Even Kitty can’t believe how amazing Eight Greens are!

I tried the Eight Greens line with an Eminence starter kit, which is a terrific way to try any skincare. I got the Eight Greens Starter kit, which is the suggested kit for anyone struggling with hormonal acne flare ups and ageing skin. Everything about this line works to reduce inflammation and irritation. You feel it immediately. A must try is the Eight Greens Phyto Masque Hot – it warms on the skin. It stimulates circulation and adds a glow that has to be seen to be believed. Perfect for doing in the afternoon when you’re going out in the evening and you want to look like a lovestruck teenager. Amazing.

Eminence Eight Greens serum

The big winner from the kit for me was the Eight Greens Serum and it has had such a positive effect on my skin I can’t imagine being without it. A reader contacted me after she got her starter kit and told me she noticed a difference right away as well. I use it twice a day, as the first step after cleansing and toning my skin, and before any other skincare I might use. From their site:

Treat the visible signs of aging with this powerful combination of organic phytoestrogens. Concentrated
whole plant yucca extract, Vitex Angus Castus and flax seed are all active ingredients in helping with the appearance of tight and bright skin.

Key Ingredients

Yucca Extract: antioxidant; source of phytoestrogens
Flaxseed/Linseed Extract: Omega 3s, antioxidant
Hop Extract: antioxidant
Paprika: invigorates and rejuvenates the look of skin
Vitex Agnus Castus: source of antioxidant bioflavanoids
Biocomplex™: a booster of antioxidants, vitamins, Coenzyme Q10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve the appearance of skin

I love the Eight Greens Whipped Moisturizer so that may be next on my list as well. I ended up getting the Probiotic Cleanser, just to fight off any zits that get any funny ideas about popping up on my face. I wholeheartedly recommend this line to anyone suffering from hormonal skin nightmares. It will change your life.

Organic Acne Fighters: Odacité & Osmia Organics Skin Oils Kill Zits

Organic Acne Fighters: Odacité & Osmia Organics Skin Oils Kill Zits

Damn you, acne! One would think that by the time we are long past puberty, long past childbearing and on our way to *cough* menopause *cough* that acne would cease to be an issue. It doesn’t have to be menopausal either – PMS zits, stress hormone zits…. I’ve battled them for so many years that it feels like a lifelong vendetta. It is definitely hormonal, but is also effected by my diet. Yes. My diet. I know that sugar, lots of it, is the worst thing for my skin. Chocolate, too. Not the super dark variety, eaten in small doses, but the milky creamy evil stuff. I can guarantee a break out after sweets binge. I try to resist, people, I really do, but who is really that noble? Not me. At any rate, even when I cut out all the evil foods, a cystic zit will grow in spite of my good behaviour. Stress, hormonal swings – who knows why? But when it happens, I try to kill it immediately. I have used everything to fight it – benzoyl peroxide (oy my skin), salicylic acid (not bad in small doses), prescription creams (retin A hurts my face, prescription benzoyl peroxide works for a very short time), sulphur (works but not always). Sigh. So I decided to try the natural skincare route. And I found some natural warriors that fight acne to the death.

osmia organics spot treatment

I started using the beautiful products from Osmia Organics a few years ago. Her products helped my daughter through a wicked perioral dermatitis (exzema, meet acne) during her stressful master’s degree program. The Osmia Organics Facial Calibration serum has brought my skin back from the brink after abusing it with the above medical treatments on more than one occasion. I had seen posts on social media about her Spot Treatment Oil and every single one hailed it as their Holy Grail Acne Killer. I say the same. When a nasty cyst starts growing under the skin – you know the kind – they hurt and you know its ONLY GOING TO GET BIGGER. You know you shouldn’t touch it, but you do. Honestly – a few days of applying her spot treatment oil to the area several times a day shrinks that bitch and shows it who’s the boss. You may have to do it again if it flares up but it works. I can feel the results sometimes minutes after I apply the oil. It’s astounding. At $22 US acne sufferers cannot afford to not have this in their arsenal.

“A surprisingly powerful blend of essential oils combats bacteria and diminishes blemishes, while evening primrose oil prevents overdrying and heals the skin. Unlike most acne solutions, this serum does not strip the skin of its oil, and does not leave blemishes flaky and crusted while healing. Used early and often, our natural acne treatment is very effective on blemishes even before they come to the surface fully, often preventing them from surfacing at all. The Spot Treatment has a very pleasant, lemony scent (and no tea tree oil), making it a pleasure to use.”

– organic evening primrose oil and essential oils of lavender*, cajeput*, lemon*, parsley, thyme, cypress*, and rosemary CO2*
– 96.5% certified organic ingredients

OD-077BlC-2T

As with any skincare, even miracles have exceptions. So, in the case when my Osmia Organics Spot Treatment isn’t enough, I break out the BIG GUNS. Odacité Black Cumin & Cajeput Serum Concentrate  ($32 USD) is the bomb dot com and I have yet to meet a zit that is a match for this miracle in a bottle. It is part of the Odacité collection of concentrates that are designed to be incorporated into your existing skincare routine. They are highly refined, tested and full of natural science and goodness and they work. The Black Cumin Concentrate (what I call it for the sake of brevity) kills inflammation almost upon contact. I find for me it works best as a spot treatment, but it is also perfect for adding a drop or two to your current skincare routine.

– Formulated to absorb deep into pores, this active serum helps to achieve blemish-free skin and smooth the complexion
– The purifying properties of Black Cumin oil control the spread of breakout-causing bacteria.
– Therapeutic Cajeput acts at the source of the problem with potent antiseptic properties, helping to prevent further pimple eruption.
– In aromatherapy, Cajeput is known to promote clear thoughts and liveliness.

Verdict? Love. THEY WORK and I cannot imagine being without them.

Trind Nail Balsam Should Totally Be A Cult Item

Trind Nail Balsam Should Totally Be A Cult Item

Trind Nails is offering my readers 35% off their entire site with the code “dalybeauty” valid on the US and Canadian sites until September 5, 2015.

I first read about Trind Nail Balsam ($20 CAD) a few years ago. I was reading one of my favourite nail blogs, Loodie Loodie Loodie. She is wealth of information about the physiology of nails, and what is good for them. In addition to proper filing techniques,  Trind Nail Balsam is one of her favourite items for nail health, and for good reason. I remember at the time wanting Trind Nail Balsam really badly but could not find any salons locally that carried it, which made me want it more, of course. Scarcity value has that effect on me, and most often with beauty products.

Nail-Balsam

Trind is a Dutch nail product company that has been around for over twenty five years. They have been sold mostly in Europe and in select salons, so it hasn’t been readily available to North Americans until recently. And even then, Trind one of those niche brands that seems to excel simply by word of mouth and it’s reputation, which has clearly been great. Trind Nail Balsam is formulated to be an exact copy of natural nail moisture, which I’ve learned is very important to maintaining healthy nails. Dry nails peel, crack and can never seem to grow. Trind Nail Balsam contains d-Panthenol, Phytantriol, and Biotin to mimic the moisture in our nails and which provides continuous hydration. It’s also oil-free so after you apply it, and rub it in, it absorbs instantly, and you can apply polish right on top. This goes against everything we’ve been taught – strip that nail dry before putting on polish. Acetone, alcohol, whatever it takes to dry out that nail so the polish sticks! Yikes!

Trind Nail Balsam dalybeauty

Since I’ve been using Trind Nail Balsam my nails are strong, flexible and healthy. They don’t split or peel anymore, and my manicures last forever! If you saw my stash of nail products you would understand it when I say I’ve tried everything. It is The Best Nail Health Product I have ever used. If it isn’t a cult “must-have” nail product now, it will be soon. Try it!

I also LOVE Trind polishes ($13 CAD). They are permanent loves in my collection. The gorgeous colours are also full of strengthening ingredients. The purple Luscious Lavender is one of the prettiest frosty shades and applied like a dream. The coral Mighty Macaron is simply one of the prettiest summer shades ever.

Obsessing Over Penetration: Deciem Hylamide Gets Under Your Skin In The Best Way

Obsessing Over Penetration: Deciem Hylamide Gets Under Your Skin In The Best Way

If you haven’t tried the DECIEM Hylamide, and you have skin, dude. Get on it! The eye and facial serums in the DECIEM line are blowing my mind. And I’m not the only beauty blogger who is loving this stuff. We get pretty jaded, what with the LATEST! NEWEST! BECAUSE SCIENCE! stuff that arrives for review on a regular basis. Yes of course there are many great lines out there, and I’ve fallen hard for a few products that are now staples in my skincare. DECIEM Hylamide is all about every layer of your skin. Penetration, man. It’s what our skin needs. DECIEM is a really cool Canadian company that is all about science. They have a sense of humour, which a quick peruse of their site quickly shows. The founder, Brandon Truaxe, was one of the brains behind one of my favourite simple skincare saviours, Indeed Labs Hydraluron serum.

“Your skin has more layers than you know. You’re probably ignoring most of them”

Deciem Hylamide

We’ve heard a lot of skincare buzz words in the past several years, ingredients, ingredients and more ingredients! A lot of us seek out and want certain ingredients because of buzz. Some are deserving of the hype and praise, and some not so much. Things like hyaluronic acid are good things. Things like collagen, stem cells and plasma (what. even.) sound great, and I suppose some work, but for the most part these things don’t perform the miracles we are led to expect. Most of these ingredients are in suspended in molecules that are way too large to penetrate the dermis, or too small to treat the areas they are targeting. We kind of know this, right? But we are forever hopeful, if not in vain.

Deciem Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age Serum SubQ Eyes

So while most skincare brands focus on simply “penetration”, DECIEM Hylamide is focused on controlled depth of penetration, aimed at targeting multiple skin/dermis depths and functions in single treatment regimens. Talk about keeping it simple. Hylamide encapsulates it’s active ingredients in varying sizes, ensuring that the right molecule makes it to the right place. The Hylamide SubQ serums come in little glass bottles with glass droppers – a very lab and science packaging. MY ONLY GRIPE: I am not a fan of this type of packging, having accidentally knocked over several bottles and spread hundreds of dollars of serums on my bathroom counter over the years.  I’m not sure how it could be improved on, but I do wish a more stable and secure package was possible.

Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age Serum ($38 CAD for 30ml – yeah, that’s right, THIRTY EIGHT DOLLARS) is at the top of my skincare regiment, and I NEVER EVER EVER want to be without this. Oh, mama! My sensitive skin breaks out if I look at it wrong. It’s got oil! Pores! Fine lines! You name it. Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age serum and it’s lovely molecules offer surface hydration, below-surface hydration, treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, dynamic lines, sagginess and textural irregularities. My beautiful friend Tracy over at Beauty Reflections said it best on Twitter a few weeks ago “Hylamide has made my skin as smooth as glass”. Friends – this is a true statement. When I first tried it, I thought it seemed like any other hyaluronic serum I’ve tried. Lovely, light, simple, and moisturizing. Oh no, no, no. This is no simple serum. My pores are tighter, my skin is smoother. When I have a breakout (damn you, Laura Mercier powder foundation) Hylamide soothes my face and helps it heal. It has a ton of awesome ingredients you can read about here.

The Hylamide SubQ Eyes ($35 for 15ml) serum is just as amazing. One teeny tiny drop covers my orbital area. The skin around the eyes is four times thinner than that of the rest of the body. SubQ Eyes is a concentrated strength, clinical serum that uses Deciem advanced technology and ingredients to target multiple aspects of under-eye ageing at once. SubQ Eyes also helps correct puffiness and dark circles. I was amazed the first time I used it. It is light – a serum – and feels silky and smooth on the skin. Yet, my eye area stays dewy and hydrated all day. Trust me on this, I’m a crazy lady about hydrated skin.

Is my Deciem Hylamide glow blinding you with science?

Is my Deciem Hylamide glow blinding you with science?

To sum up, I love Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age and SubQ Eyes so much, I want to marry them. These serums have earned a permanent place in my skincare and beauty routine. The products deliver, and the price is beyond reasonable. This is is accessible skincare science for everyone. Boys and girls, obvies. Verdict? LOVE.

Music: I have really been loving my smooth seventies rock playlists – “Yacht Rock” on Songza is a favourite, but yes I have my own as well. Now, if I can only figure out the latest iTunes iteration and My Music, hopefully I can find them. I’m not sure why, but this music just feels like lazy, sunny summer days to me. The days when endless days summer seemed to lie ahead, and time went by so slowly. Ahhh, *saudade….

TV Marathon: Thank the TV gods for Netflix! My favourite marathon recently is the Danish TV show Rita, about a Danish school teacher. From IMDB: “Following the life of a very outspoken and rebellious woman, Rita is a school teacher who is competent in the classroom, but seems to need a teacher of her own, when it comes to her personal life”. I LOVE Rita, and all of the characters are just so great. There is something about the whole Danish vibe that reminds me of Canada (the weather? Socialism? LOL) and I just can’t get enough of it. Season 3 was just released and I binge watched that sucker like a boss.

Food: Bowls, bowls and more bowls. Seriously, what could be better than all the yummy ingredients you love stirred up in a bowl? Better yet, make them healthy and flavourful? It’s like a salad/soup/main course sandwich. All the good stuff. In a bowl. I’m sure this is actually not even close to being new, but it’s become A Thing at the healthier restaurants and assorted eateries and I am addicted. GIMME A BOWL OF ALL THE GOOD STUFF PLEASE.

Wellness: Internal skincare. Yeah, that’s right. Supplemental beauty that you eat. Not a million miles away from taking biotin for nails and hair, right? Canada’s coolest cutting edge skincare company, DECIEM, has this line called Fountain. I am pretty sure the creator has a time machine and has travelled to the future to bring us miracles. So far I am loving the Hyaluronic Molecule, “a concentrated beauty supplement with Hyaluronic Acid to keep your skin looking plump and happy from within”.

Skincare: DECIEM Hylamide and Eminence Eight Greens. My aging, hormonal acne-prone skin has never been happier. Never. Detailed reviews to come, but in the meantime, if you suffer from any of the same skin care woes as I do, go get these things. Now.

Eminence Eight Greens Hylamide

Makeup: The most delicious bronzer in my collection, Guerlain Terracotta Terre d’ Été Tan Enhancing Bronzer. This gorgeous limited edition bronzer is dusted in gold, and smells like heavenly tiare. It is one of the loveliest sheer bronzers I have ever used, and is super easy to build up. It comes in a giant pancake sized compact, so I feel free to dust that baby from head to toe. Looks gorgeous and summery on moisturized arms and legs. LOVE. Get it while you still can!

Guerlain Terracotta Terre d'Été

Perfume: If you know me, you know I adore green perfumes. I love the fresh, earthy fragrances of green things – grass, leaves, stems, mosses….They take me to happy summer place, with daydreams of freshly cut lawns on hot summer weekends, walking through dark, cool green forests and pathways to beaches, mossy stones in mountain streams, hiding in hedgerows and picnics in meadows. The delicious greens in Hampton Sun Privet Bloom has been like a summer memory in a bottle for me lately. “Named after the beautiful privet privacy hedges synonymous with the Hamptons lifestyle, Hampton Sun’s Privet Bloom Fragrance is a delicate scent that captivates the senses and captures the Hamptons’ pure, natural elegance. This destination fragrance is reminiscent of a blooming privet blossom tousled into a stunning bouquet of delicate aromas. Privet Bloom encompasses the essence of nature’s beauty and transcends the seasons – making it the perfect fragrance all year round.” Truth in adverstising, I must say. LOVE.

Hampton Sun Privet Bloom

*saudade:  A deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return.

Show Some Skin: Bioderma, Hampton Sun, Charlotte Tilbury & Nuxe

Show Some Skin: Bioderma, Hampton Sun, Charlotte Tilbury & Nuxe

It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, I love having soft touchable skin that looks as good as it feels. When it comes to peel off those jeans and don sundresses and shorts, I like to feel glam despite being in a dark nightmarish winter cave with no sunshine for months. No need to worry because tanned and toned skin is a bottle (or two) away.

Bioderma Photoderm Self Tanner

I will always love St Tropez self tanning mousse, but I have a new self tanner that I adore. Bioderma Photoderm Self Tanner is easy to use and gradual, which means it is almost foolproof. It has built in moisturizers that condition and protect the skin, while giving it the perfect glow, with no orange and no bad smells. It actually smells soft and nice. I make sure to exfoliate, head to toe, in the shower. Then, I moisturize with one of my favourite moisturizers, and let my skin absorb it, making sure to add extra lotion on my knees, elbows, hands and feet. Then, I mist myself, head to toe, and ask my daughter to do my back and the backs of my legs. I do a little bit of blending, then let it dry while I do my hair and makeup. I will do this two or three times to get a nice glow on, then maintain with a once weekly misting.

Now that you have your tan on, lets add some glow! I have a couple products that never fail to make my skin glow.

Hampton Sun Bronze Shimmer Cooling Spray

Hampton Sun Bronze Shimmer Cooling Spray ($32 US) may be my favourite body product to date. It mists on like a dream, in a soft even mist, leaving only the softest shimmer behind. It’s full of skin-nourishing goodness as well, with aloe, chamomile, grape seed extract and vitamins A through E. And, with that heavenly Hampton Sun Privet Bloom fragrance, I feel like I’m on a east coast beach holiday with sunkissed skin, ready to break out some crisp white linen, or my favourite sundress. Seriously, this product is a must – have for all you sun goddesses (and gods!) out there.

Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body

Charlotte Tilbury is the queen of glowing skin! Seriously, this beauty line has everyone you need to get your glow on. The Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body ($78) is utter genius. It is gorgeous bronze shimmery “precious metal” cream that is basically a golden highlighter for your body. How does that work? Well, you highlight what you want to emphasize. A popular beauty trick is to add a soft line of highlighter down the bridge of the nose – this draws the eye and gives the appearance of a smaller, slimmer nose. Using shimmery body makeup the same way has been a trick photographers have used for years, and now we can do the same! Trust me – it is more subtle than it sounds, and just adds a sexy contour to your legs and/or arms. Supermodel Body has a metal applicator that rolls and cools the skin while applying a perfect amount of product on the legs. A little goes a long way, and this tube will last me ages. I blend it out a little bit and boom – I’m ready for the cat walk.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse

You don’t think I’d make this list and leave out Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse, did you? Come on! I like the big bottle, with the spray. I think all body oil products should have sprays. It just makes application that much easier. I have been raving about the delicately scented and beautifully moisturizing Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse for years. You can read about it here.

How do you like to glow?

Bioderma and Nuxe are sold at drugstores in Canada, Charlotte Tilbury is sold online and at select stores in the USA and at Holt Renfrew Toronto & Vancouver in Canada as of July 2015. Hampton Sun is available at select stores and online.

Body Lotion Lovin’ … Vichy, Say Yes To Coconut, Nip+Fab & DermaE

Body Lotion Lovin’ … Vichy, Say Yes To Coconut, Nip+Fab & DermaE

I suppose if I had one skincare mantra it would be “moisturize, moisturize, moisturize”. Well, that and “always wash your face before bedtime”. And “exfoliate”. But seriously, moisturize. My bedside table and bathroom counter are practically collapsing under the weight of my prodz. People there is always something to try! And, unless it’s awful stuff or gives me a rash, I use up every drop. And the drugstore is my favourite place for body products. These days, one can get super discount to luxury products at the drugstore. I could linger in the skincare section for days. I’ve used soooo many it’s hard to keep track. Keri Lotion, Lubriderm and Nivea of course. I adore Nivea Soft and Nivea Q10, they are favourites but I’m always trying new stuff.

I loves me some soft, supple and glowing skin, and I also love the ritual of applying lotions and potions to my body as much as I do my face. You should see the contortions I’ve developed over the years to get that lotion everywhere. The only spot I can’t get is a small area in the middle of my back, but I haven’t given up…

derma e vitamin e intensive therapy body lotion

derma e Vitamin E Intensive Therapy Body Lotion (fragrance free)

The perfect basic moisturizing lotion for those who don’t like sticky, greasy or scents. It does what it says it does, which is moisturizes my skin beautifully. The fragrance-free option is perfect for perfume lovers who don’t want their body products to interfere even one bit with their perfume. I find it works best right after the shower when your skin is slightly damp. Full of naturally-sourced Vitamin E, this lotion delivers antioxidants, along with moisturizing and nourishing benefits. This derma e lotion helps your skin lock in moisture and defend itself against elemental stress and dryness. It’s also 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, GMO-free, phthalate-free, petrolatum-free, lanolin-free. Under $20. Love!

Yes To Coconuts Ultra Light Body Lotion Spray

Yes To Coconut Ultra Light Spray Body Lotion

I love this! Yes it’s light but it moisturizes beautifully. The application sprayer is a great design feature. I LOVE spraying on my moisturizer. Can more lotions do this please? The lovely and light formula contains virgin coconut and super-light jojoba oils which penetrate the skin beautifully. It’s perfect for those with dry skin that require intense moisturize. Go on and spray on softness! Petroleum, SLS and paraben free, it absorbs quickly and leaves my skin super soft. Yes, it smells a lot like coconuts, so I usually wear this to bed, unless the scent of coconuts goes with my perfume. I wish they would make this in a fragrance free version, but I like the way this makes my skin feel enough to use the coconutty one. Under $20.

Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Body

Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Body Cream

Ok – first let me say I am new to the Nip+Fab line. I saw it in my daughter’s bathroom (she heard about the line from Kylie Jenner) and after falling in love with the Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Pads and the matching serum, I knew I would like the body cream. I was right. I like an exfoliating body product, but the only one I have used recently that actually works, Lac Hydrin, does not smell good. I use it on my feet at bedtime but could not bear it head to toe. Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Body Cream smells like yummy grapefuits and feels soft and luxurious on the skin. It feels gentle, which makes me think the glycolic acid levels are not overly high. My skin does look smoother and less dry and papery since I’ve been using it. This cream has the odd property of almost mattifying the skin. It is pretty much the opposite of a shiny greasy cream. I love it. Also under $20.

Vichy Ideal Body Serum

Vichy Ideal Body Lait-Sérum

Ahhhh I love love love this! Pure luxury that feels, smells and makes me look terrific. I love this so much and use it on the parts of my body that are most likely to show signs of aging – décolleté, upper arms, bust, legs and knees especially. I am very pleased with the results, which are soft smooth skin that glows. I use it right after the bath or shower on damp skin. From the Vichy site:

For the 1st time, active ingredients traditionally used in face care: Hyaluronic Acid and LHA were combined with 10 fundamental oils to help women obtain ideal skin quality on the body: firmer, smoother and more radiant skin. Vichy Research discovered that lipids are essential agents for ideal skin quality. Anti-dryness, improved skin radiance and luminosity, smoothing, softness and firming action are the many benefits that the new Ideal Body range offers.

To me, it works like a facial serum in that the improvements that I see continue as long as I use the product. Is it a miracle product which will give me the skin of an eighteen year old? No. But does it help my aging, too-much-sun-had-as-a-teenager skin look smoother, softer and more even toned? Absolutely. It’s not sticky, and did I mention how lovely it smells? Between $20-30, depending on the size.

My Current Morning & Evening Skincare Routine

My Current Morning & Evening Skincare Routine

Lately, I’ve been going back to some skincare basics. My oily, aging and acne prone skin likes it when I keep my skincare simple. So a simple, gentle yet thorough cleansing routine, followed by simple yet effective-ingredient based skincare products can help restore my skin from ravages that occur when I try various new skincare routines. Ah, the things we bloggers do so you don’t have to, dear reader.

I know my skin well enough to know that it needs exfoliation on a regular basis. That is when it is happiest, and it becomes very unhappy when I don’t. So I have some old favourites, and some new additions that are making it into the rotation.

Morning:

I use tepid to warm water and gently wash my face. Right now I am using CeraVe Foaming Cleanser – a tiny bit in my hands mixed with water foams up just enough to freshen my skin. I gently pat my face dry using a clean washcloth (I buy them in bulk!) and then spritz rosewater  into my hands. Then I press it into the skin on my face and neck, as I find it moistens my skin and leaves it feeling dewy. Then, I apply my moisturizing serum (more on that in a future post). I let my serum dry, then apply NeoStrata Glycolic Renewal™ Smoothing Lotion 10%. This one is an oldie but a goodie – repackaged from when it was Neostrata Level 3 – the glycolic acid in this lotion is perfect for my skin. It exfoliates my thick skin, keeping my pores in order and reducing the look of fine lines. Getting rid of dead papery skin is the best way to improve the appearance of ageing skin. Glycolic acid use helps reduce the build up of dead skin cells in our pores as well, so skin looks smoother and glowier. However, the 10% is relatively strong, so if you have sensitive skin, you might want to try the 5% Lotion. The Neostrata Glycolic Acid Lotion formulations are best for combination to oily skin, but fear not, they have 5% and 10% Glycolic Acid in Cream formulations for normal to dry skin.

I then apply my eye serum (stay tuned!) followed by my new favourite eye cream, Odacité Ultra Effective Eye cream, which I gush about here. Then I apply my body lotion, and by the time I’m done that, my face is ready for the day. Be it just a little sunscreen, or some powder and blush.

Evening:

Time for bed/pjs/sweats means it’s time to wash mah face. Seriously, I really enjoy this ritual. Must be the beauty junkie in me. Lately, I adore my Charlotte Tilbury Multi-Miracle Glow Balm ($70) for washing the day off. This stuff is like the champagne of cold creams, and it’s balm-oil texture melts away the most stubborn of sunscreens or long wearing makeup. I like to finish that off with a hot wet wash cloth. Then, my latest obsesh, Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Pads ($16). Seriously – love. I’ve used a few glycolic toners I enjoy, but the ease of use with pre moistened pads is a terrific feature. They have a gentle amount of glycolic acid at 2.8%, but I find they make a difference in how my skin looks and feels. I give my face, neck and chest a good swipe with the pads, then gently apply my rosewater, patting it into the skin. I apply my moisturizing serum, and, when that dries, I use my Jouviance Restructiv Collagen Boost ($55). This is one of the only retinol products I have been able to use without irritation! Seriously, miraculous.

From the Jouviance site:

Exclusive Technology

Formulated with Pro-Collagen Activator (PCA), an exclusive Jouviance amino acid copper complex that boosts cell (fibroblast) energy.
Uses patented RovisomeTM encapsulation technology to deliver retinol into your skin’s lower layers. This smart bypass allows retinol’s active ingredients to be released deeper down without irritation. No more redness. No more flaking. The result? Fewer wrinkles and dark spots, and a smoother, even complexion.
Reactivates production of collagen 3 (youth collagen). Rebalances the collagen 1/collagen 3 ratio.
Promotes growth of new collagen and elastin, and prevents against future breakdown.

Developed for sensitive skin

Does not contain any parabens, sulfates, colourants, phthalates, dyes, DMAE, TEA, artificial fragrances, or occlusive agents such as silicones, paraffin, lanolin, petrolatum or mineral oil.
Developed by a dermatologist and tested under clinical control
Not tested on animals
A light texture which penetrates the skin rapidly and leaves it soft, supple, and moisturized.

After around five weeks of use, I noticed my skin was clearer, and glowing, and had a lovely texture. I feel like this is due to the combination of the daytime glycolic use and the retinol at night. So far, this routine is working for me and my skin is happy about it.

Don't be ashamed of your complexion ;)
