Summertime means outdoor music and festivals season is upon us! Time to bust out your prettiest and breeziest summer looks and look lovely while keeping your cool. This can be tougher than it seems under the hot summer sun, while we sweat and melt in the humidity. But I have a few tips for staying boho-beautiful while enjoying the sights, sounds and flavours outdoors. This advice is for fair weather! I am a wimp and if it’s gross, cold and rainy, I’m staying home!
Sunscreen!
Before anything else, you need sunscreen. I don’t know about you, but now once summer comes, sunscreen becomes part of my routine. Some sunscreens can actually take the place of a primer. My favourite Skinceuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50 doesn’t perform as a primer, but I like to call it the ultimate BB Cream for summer! It has a light airy texture yet lasts hours and hours and I am amazed how long it helps my make up stays pretty and matte while improving the look of my skintone.Vichy has a new line of Bare Skin Feel SPF lotions in SPF 45 & 60 which are AMAZING! Light and gentle for even sensitive oily skins, you can use Vichy head to toe. I keep the Vichy SPF 60 Ultra Protection stick in my purse for touch ups on my lips and nose – in a pinch you can use it on your shoulders and chest as well.
Concealer/Primer:
I need a little help evening out all my skintone. Nothing beats Lancome Effacernes for under eye circles – conditions the skin and is waterproof. It has been the ONLY undereye concealer I have used for years. For spots or blemishes, I adore Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil. Easy to apply, dries matte and stays put.
Eyes:
My favourite waterproof and long lasting eye make up prodz (that don’t irritate my sensitive eyes) are Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara for long fluttery lashes that last, and Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes eyeliner pencil. I’m loving Matte Brown, as it makes my hazel eyes pop.
Blush/Bronzer:
If it’s really hot, you may want to avoid a blush, as you will likely have a lovely and natural flush! If you must, use a stain. My favourite is Hourglass Aura Cheek Stain, but I also love Benetint. Both leave a long lasting stain that won’t melt off in the heat like a powder or cream blush. And how about a little self tanner, applied the night before you head out? I love Vitatanz for the natural bronze, never orange, shade. Looks healthy and evens out skintone.
Lips:
Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge! I cannot rave enough about the unstoppability of this lippy! The handy packaging with indelible colour on one end and a gloss on the other is perfect for tossing into your bag. And your lips will look amazing all night. Tossing a moisturizing lip balm into bag is also a good idea – my old favourite Clarins Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm with Rose Wax is perfect.
Powder:
I keep a powder/brush all in one in my purse at all times. I love Jane Iredale Brush-Me Matte and Charlotte Ronson Closer Finishing Powder. Both keep skin matte and smooth without depositing or building up colour.
Ta-da! You are ready for a day at the show and you will look pretty and put together, but not overly made up. Perfect for summer fun. Be sure to use an effective and long lasting deodorant – Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant is amazing. Smells gorgeous and does not quit! It’s also soft on the skin and non-irritating. If you have long hair, consider some Goody Double Wear elastics around your wrist in case it’s hot – you can pull your hair back into a pony or braid easy-peasy. Be sure to wear a bunch because you know your friends will want one too. My daughter Biddy suggests tossing a few bandages into your bag, just in case you get a blister. I keep a small roller bottle of Auric Blends Egyptian Goddess perfume oil in my purse for a light touch of scent.
One more little tip – I keep packets of Emergen-C in my purse during the summer months. Pour one into a water bottle to restore electrolytes and stay hydrated, especially when we sweat.
What are your favourite long lasting, sweat-proof, rock-folk-jazz-country-proof prodz?
Early video of Stevie Nicks singing backstage as she gets her make up done…perfect.
