Beautiful Beauty Blog Round Up

Is it winter or spring? What gives with the weather? Escape with us to a beauty-full world this weekend- the group has some AMAZING posts & reviews that are not. To. Be. Missed. Chanel, Burberry, Rescue Beauty and more, plus some Bad Plastic Surgery! Always fun. Read on & enjoy….

Givenchy has released their special Harvest Collection of perfumes for this year, and I has fallen for one of them – all over again. Try to resist the gorgeous limited-edition packaging! Here is my post on Daly Beauty .

It’s time to stock up on sun protection. See Chelsea’s favorite products to protect your skin and hair at BeautyXposé.

Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine will be released on April 6. Some of the stores are taking pre-orders. Amy showed us swatches at Café Makeup to help us decide which ones to purchase.

Sabrina featured the Burberry Beauty blushes for spring at The Beauty Look Book. Let us know if one pops onto your I-want list.

While we are talking blushes, you will want to see Laurie’s choices to satisfy her passion for pink at Product Girl.

Gaia showed us a gorgeous taupe nail polish from Rescue Beauty Lounge at The Non-Blonde. We agree: it’s gorgeous! Not sure why feline Betty was looking the other way.

Primers can make such a difference in the appearance of your skin! Visit Fab over Forty to find out why Kari loves Dior’s Skinflash Primer. Hint – it will erase your fatigue.

A few times each year, Bare Escentuals creates bareMinerals eye shadow to benefit a charity. The latest shadow is a pretty and complex glimmer called Sweet Smile. See it up close on Kelly and then enter to win her giveaway contest at Gouldylox Reviews.

Charlestongirl went on a Le Métier de Beauté Lip Crème tear after she fell in love with the first one she purchased. See the colors she bought – and loves – at Best Things in Beauty.

Want to see some horrendous plastic surgery? Debbi at DivaDebbi drew everyone’s attention to a site that features botched jobs on celebrities. Even though the photos are disgusting, see if you don’t keep “turning the pages.”

Givenchy’s Beautiful Harvest: 2010 Organza Neroli

Givenchy’s Beautiful Harvest: 2010 Organza Neroli

This year, as in the past few years, Givenchy has chosen the best fragrant harvests to use as special editions of their perfumes, as the Givenchy Harvest, or, Les Récolte Givenchy. These are special & limited edition perfumes which are good news for fans of Givenchy scents. My experience with these perfumes has been that they enhance the original in such a lovely way, that a lover of a certain Givenchy perfume will also love the Harvest edition. As well, the Harvest editions may indeed garner new fans as was my experience with the lovely 2010 Organza Neroli, this year’s Harvest Edition. They come in gorgeous bottles, heavy but not huge, and they are in a lovely presentation box perfect for collectors, gift giving, or just lovers of all things elegant and lovely (moi? mais, bien sûr!)
I did love Organza when it was released- a rich creamy oriental floral with gourmand tendencies. A heart of white florals grounded with vanilla and woody notes- yum! It was an elegant scent that I wore when I was going out on the town and wanted to feel sexy and feminine. There was nothing quiet about Organza and it offered no apologies for being drop dead sexy. It still has legions of fans around the world and has become a classic.

The light is making this just glow
As time goes on, for some, scent tastes change, and I moved away from my beloved Orientals (Opium, Dolce & Gabbana, Allure, Kenzo Jungle Elephant etc) and into simpler scents. I like to smell ladylike and feminine and hints of orange blossom or other notes that summon up soap really appeal to me. One of my favourite neroli scents is Laura Mercier Neroli- just simple clean straight up neroli, which, while lovely, isn’t always “enough”.

The addition of this beautiful blossom to Organza is so unusual but somehow works for me. It is all neroli right off the top, with the green notes adding an unusual cologne note, then dries down to the creamy rich Organza I know so well. The floral notes play up beautifully and the green notes add a bubbly effervescence to Organza- actually making it a perfect version of Organza to wear in warmer weather, or more casually, but still with that drop dead diva appeal, just softer. There is a bergamot top note in the original Organza and adding the neroli somehow enhances the fruity effect but in a fresh way. But the neroli really makes the white florals at the heart of Organza shine.  Love it!

Gorgeous!

Vacay…

I’m on holidays guys…I was so determined to write a few posts while watching the palm trees gently sway in the breeze, but, um, it hasn’t happened. Instead I’m, well, having a holiday, hanging out, reading, swimming, feeling the sun (with sunscreen, of course!) and laughing til I cry, because my daughters do that to me.
I left the snow, wind and slush and am happily soaking up every ounce of sunshine….

Be back soon… xo

All Things Pink & Beautiful by Chanel, Bobbi Brown & Tarte

All Things Pink & Beautiful by Chanel, Bobbi Brown & Tarte

With Spring dragging her feet I really needed to add some cheery colour to my routine. Pink is always perfect. I love pink flowers, I love pink sunsets and my favourite fruit, watermelon, is a lovely pink. Pink clothes can work miracles and brighten a sallow complexion, and you will always look gorgeous and glowy in a pink room. Think about that when decorating a boudoir ladies….just saying…
So here are my favourite pink things today.
Chanel Rose Insolent Nail Polish is from their Fall 2010 collection. I recall thinking such a bright pink was an odd choice for Fall but loved it all the same. I also got the Rose Confidentiel which is a nude pink, also lovely, but today is a Pink Day so no neutrals…Rose Insolent is a lovely bright fuschia pink that straddles the cool/warm scale quite nicely. I think lovers of cool and warm tones could carry this off. It manages to be bright without being fluorescent which is nice for me, making it nice for work but still fun. Very sweet, very girly but deep, rich and far enough off the candy scale to work on a grown up. Verdict- LOVE.
natural light- it’s not quite this blue in real life…
Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pale Pink is a richly pigmented cream blush that enhances almost any complexion- if applied correctly. The key with the Pot Rouge blushes is intensity- as little or as much as you like. I cannot imagine using one up because they are so rich I only need a teensy bit to add a glow. As well, using a flat topped brush to apply a cream blush was a life changing experience for me.  The lovely Angie, a fabu make up artist here in Ottawa, suggested softening a cream blush by “buffing” it on with a flat brush. I have the Bobbi Brown one, that I bought to use with bronzing powder, but that NEVER worked for me so it just sat there in my make up drawer, taunting me for tossing away my money on something so useless. Not so! I just tap it on the blush, gently rub it in the lid before lightly buffing it on the apples of my cheeks. Ta-da! So pretty, and I look like I have been frolicking in the fresh spring air. This stuff lasts hours on me as well- it is not as fuschia in real life as the product shot above would indicate, but it is pigmented. Verdict- true pink LOVE.
Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge: sheer & intense, natural light
Tarte Lip Stain Lipsurgence natural lip tint in Charmed is a perfect way to bring the soft pink lip that has been all over the runways for Spring/Summer 2011 into real life. Fun, bright but so wearable, this colour has me seriously considering actually wearing more colour than Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Boy (Your Lips But Better Lipstick). My daughter Emilie got this (she is much braver than I regarding lippy!) and after seeing her wear it so effortlessly, I might be sold! It is a stain, so it lasts forever, yet it seems to have more presence on the lip than the lighter liquid stains we all know so well. She swatched it for me and it really is so sheer and lovely. But, it can be built up for more intensity. It is a “Lipsurgence” tint which means it is infused with all kind of good moisturizing stuff for a soft moist and naturally plumped look without any stinging or tingling. Lovely! I think I’ve been charmed…Verdict- LOVE! Thanks Em.

What are your favourite pick me ups for Spring? Do you do pink and if so, what are your fave ways to wear it?

Spring- I’m looking at you!
Darn that groundhog and his getting my hopes up for an early spring….March came in like a lamb and we know what that means *cries*
Watching the snow fall outside that is slowly turning into freezing rain and dreaming about the big melt. On the plus side, the days are getting longer. It makes me happy to wake up to daylight and I’ve even heard the birds singing. And it’s not pitch dark when I start making dinner either…so we know it’s coming, right?
Full, lush eyelashes are still in the forefront of everyone’s beauty mind. Jane (that’s me!) from Daly Beauty may have found her ideal mascara for perfect lashes.
We all seem to love watching what the celebrities will be wearing on the red carpet. Kari at Fab Over Forty shares how she thinks the celebs over 40 fared.
What does one wear to a special event such as the Independent Spirit Awards? Kelly from Gouldylox Reviews shares how she prepared for the big day!
The much anticipated new Chanel foundation Vitalumiere Aqua Ulta-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup is finally here. Charlestongirl at Best Things in Beauty shares her thoughts.
Debbi from DivaDebbi is also a Red Carpet fan. She gives us her dish on the good, the bad and the well…you decide!
Anne from BeautyXposé was asked to be an Aveeno Ambassador. She shares her incredible experience she had with Aveeno and Exhale Spa in LA.
Are you ready for an island escape after this dreadful winter? Gaia from The Non-Blonde shows us a bit of summer with the palette Island Oasis by Estee Lauder.
Carla from Product Girl has been relying on Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide On Shadow Pencils to simplify her morning routine. Check out her favorite shades and tips.
Amy from Café Makeup has been busy swatching the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation. Is there one that will work for your skin tone?
NARS Illuminator in Orgasm was a huge hit, so they’ve added a few other iconic shades. Sabrina from The Beauty Look Book swatches and shares her thoughts on them.
Steel Yourself For This Beautiful Chanel Polish

Steel Yourself For This Beautiful Chanel Polish

My amazing Chanel Fairy gifted me with the pretty much unobtainable Chanel Steel and Strong from the Chanel Soho Collection in Fall 2010. She has a knack for tracking these beauties down and for that, I am eternally grateful!
This colour is rich and heavy, and makes me think of those magnetic hematite stones. I feel strong when I wear it. And of course, it is Chanel so the formula is like buttah to apply, I usually just use one coat with some Seche Vite (don’t have this? You need it…) on top. I find darker frosts tend to dull so I re-apply a top coat daily or every other day to keep the shine up.
Natural light
I would have to say Steel is my favourite grey/black nail colour. It has the magical Chanel micro-glitter which is to say, it is practically invisible making it elegant and grown up but still fun. Chanel uses their frost and glitter to add dimension to a colour, not to sparkle up the town Ke$ha style- which is ok, if you like that kind of thing- and that suits me perfectly. For me to wear an almost black nail I need something to make it less stark and dark. The grey-ish blue micro glitter in Steel add that little something. It’s a fun colour, kind of a bad ass colour, and it looks as terrific with monochromatic business casual as it does with jeans and biker boots. Loving it!

What is your favourite black/pseudo black nail colour?

Kiehl’s Mineral Mascara is Marvelous & Beautiful

One of my pet peeves with mascara is thick clumpy mascara that looks fake and make-up-y. I am a lover of soft and natural make up, more so as I get older. I like my lashes to look dark, and perhaps a bit longer than they are naturally. Not thick, spidery, uber black and clumpy. Actually, that look is a pet peeve of mine…shall we bring KK and Eva Longoria out as witnesses for the prosecution? UGH.
KK at the 2011 Oscars
Eva at the 2011 Grammys
Thankfully, my lovely, wise and make up obsessed stylist Katarina told me about Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara. She is a natural beauty and has gorgeous lashes that are so pretty you would never even guess she is wearing mascara. My older daughter loves big lush lashes and counts Diorshow as one of her faves so her and I have fairly different criteria for our mascara, but, she wanted to try the Kiehl’s as well. As well, I have to have a waterproof/long wearing mascara as my oily skin turns all eye make up into raccoon eyes. Whereas she likes something easy to remove as she often wears contact lenses and hates the oily remover necessary to take off waterproof eye make up. So, I kind of though one of us would like it, but the chances of both of us loving it were slim. Wrong! We both love it! It is light enough and long wearing enough for me, yet dark enough and easy enough to remove for her. Not sure how that works or is even possible but yay!
It is so natural it almost doesn’t feel like anything is going onto your lashes. But, wait. They are darker and longer, yet not goopy or clumpy. It is gentle, has no scent and does not appear, so far, to irritate either one of us. It has a silky smooth texture, but not watery. I’d almost call it magical, because I feel like I’m putting nothing on my lashes yet they look better after I apply it. We use the black formula and it is a true black without being too dark or matte, but it also doesn’t look wet. Perhaps waxy is a good word? Whatever it is, it is amazing and is officially my new Favourite Mascara. The fact that it is paraben free and full of moisturizing jojoba oil and acai is a bonus. It uses “minerals that are pulverized into a very fine powder to impart a smooth and even application” which I imagine contributes to the delicate texture of the product and the gorgeous subtle colour. All in all, it is a win.
I got my Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara at the Kiehl’s counter at Holt Renfrew for $24. It sells for $16 in the US so when I’m on holiday this month I plan to stock up- especially considering the Canadian dollar is stronger than the US dollar right now.
